Leo Cauffield, former head of MI6's counter-espionage section, resigns after failing to arrest two Cambridge-spy defectors. He moves to Beirut with his new wife Sally Tyler and their children from previous marriages. Leo works as a journalist while Sally believes he's leading a quiet life. In January 1963, Leo suddenly disappears. Sally learns that British intelligence suspects Leo has defected to Russia. She embarks on a journey across London, New York, and Moscow to find the truth about her husband's disappearance.
