Full Biography

Born on December 22, 1971, in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, Asuka Kurosawa is a distinguished Japanese actress and former gravure model who has become a prominent figure in international cult cinema. She first gained significant acclaim for her fearless and transformative lead performance in Shinya Tsukamoto's 2002 film A Snake of June, which solidified her reputation for handling intense, psychologically demanding roles.

Kurosawa reached a new career milestone with her portrayal of Aiko Murata in Sion Sono’s 2010 masterpiece Cold Fish (Tsumetai Nettaigyo). In this dark, visceral thriller, she delivered a chilling performance as the complicit and equally sociopathic wife of a serial killer, earning praise for her ability to balance domesticity with extreme violence. Her versatility has allowed her to work across various genres, ranging from gritty independent films to major international productions, such as her appearance in Martin Scorsese’s 2016 historical drama Silence.

Throughout her career, which spans over three decades, she has appeared in dozens of films and television series, consistently choosing bold projects that challenge societal norms. Off-screen, she is married to the renowned special effects makeup artist Sōichi Umezawa. Today, Asuka Kurosawa remains a respected icon in Japanese cinema, celebrated for her elegance, intensity, and unwavering commitment to her craft.
